Simba mattress topper composition

The Simba Hybrid topper aims to replicate the feel of the Simba mattress in a smaller package.

simba mattress topper layers

There are four layers to the Simba Hybrid topper:

1. Simba mattress topper cover

There are two parts to the Simba mattress topper cover.

  • The top part is 100% polyester, a soft and breathable surface to enhance the topper's cooling features.
  • The bottom half is an anti-slip base layer with an almost plasticky feel. This helps keep your topper firmly on the mattress.

Conveniently, the top part of the cover is also removable and machine-washable at 40℃.

It's pretty easy to take off, but putting it back on again is a bit of a challenge.

During our Simba topper review, we struggled to align the grey mesh side with the sides of the topper - the mesh always seemed to sit slightly further up or down. 😡

This isn't a train smash, but it may be easier to put the cover back on again with two people.

Simba mattress topper cover zipper

The Simba topper also has elasticated corner straps, which fit snugly around your mattress and ensure it stays in place.

In our experience, choosing a topper without straps is a no-go.

We did find, though, that the Simba topper straps are quite tight.

This is great as it ensures your topper sits perfectly - but it could be challenging if you have a very deep mattress. 📏

If you look at the picture below, you can see that the strap stretches quite tightly around an 18 cm (7 inches) mattress.

Simba mattress topper straps

If you have a very deep mattress - 30 cm (11.8 inches) or deeper - this may be a bit of an issue. 🧐

Adjustable straps - as you find with the Panda mattress topper - may be a bit more practical for deep mattresses.

2. Simbatex foam comfort layer

This cooling open-cell foam layer provides comfort, support, and enhanced airflow.

It's Certipur-US certified to be free from heavy metals like mercury and lead.

The Simbatex foam is also infused with natural graphite, which is known to dissipate heat for a cooler sleep.

3. Up 2,500 Aerocoil micro pocket springs

These 20 mm pocket springs are enclosed in 100% polyester pockets for superior support.

4. High-resilience zoned support base foam

This high-density foam is Certipur-US certified.

The hybrid composition of the Simba mattress topper is unique.

Most mattress toppers are pure foam toppers, but the Simba topper combines both foams and conical pocket springs. 🌀

These add bounce and firmness, and help cool the mattress topper.

What does sleeping on the Simba mattress topper feel like?

Mattress toppers are designed as comfort layers to change how your mattress feels.

In general, they are meant to add a layer of softness and comfort to firmer mattresses - but our experience with the Simba topper was quite unique.

How firm is the Simba Hybrid topper?

It isn't easy to give a set degree of firmness to mattress toppers in the way you would give a mattress a firmness level.

This is because the firmness of the topper is directly influenced by the firmness of the mattress underneath.

However, most toppers, including the Simba topper, are generally designed to be medium firm, making your sleeping surface a little softer and giving your mattress an instant comfort boost.

That said, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the Simba topper gave our softer memory foam mattress a bit more stability.

Memory foam is characteristically softer and allows your body to sink in a little more deeply, but the hybrid composition of the Simba topper makes it a little firmer and easier to move around on.

It's these characteristics that you'll feel when sleeping on the Simba mattress topper. 🥳

Simba mattress topper

We wouldn't recommend relying on a mattress topper to make a mattress firmer, but it does help if you're stuck with a memory foam mattress and not a big fan of the way it feels.

The Simba Hybrid mattress topper really feels very different to standard memory foam mattress toppers.

Of course, if your mattress isn't memory foam, you'll still reap the benefits - the Simba topper will still be soft enough to make a firmer mattress feel a little more comfortable.

Read our guide on the best firm mattress toppers for more information.

How comfortable is the Simba topper?

The Simba topper is unique in that it combines Simbatex and pocket springs.

This has two effects:

  • The foam provides body-contouring support and pressure relief that's comfortable without being too constrictive, as memory foam often is.
  • The springs provide better support and a gentle bounce-back so you can move easily on the topper, and they adapt well to your body for tension relief.

The Simba topper is particularly well-suited to side sleepers using a slightly firmer mattress. 👌

This is because the topper allows for more sinkage, which can help correct spinal alignment.

If your mattress is too firm, pressure points will build up in the hip and shoulder areas, causing back pains and aches.

Adding a topper to the mix will allow for a little extra sinkage, ensuring spinal alignment and keeping you pain- and ache-free.

We found it incredibly comfortable to sleep on.

Can the Simba topper add a little bounce?

The Simba Hybrid topper will give you a good amount of bounce.

We like thinking of it in this way:

  • Memory foam is like a dead spot. You'll lie flat and still, and you won't feel any motion carried through.
  • The Simba topper is more "alive". You'll still lie flat and comfortably, but there is a little more movement across the surface as a whole.

If you're a restless sleeper, you'll want to be opting for a surface feel like the Simba topper. 💃

It makes moving around on the mattress much more comfortable, and you won't ever feel "stuck" in the foams.

But, despite the additional bounce, you shouldn't experience enhanced motion transfer.

The Simba topper definitely allows for more movement than a pure memory foam topper, but not enough to limit motion isolation.

During our Simba Hybrid topper review, we experienced more bounce and movement than with the Panda memory foam topper, for example, but never felt excessive motion transfer.

You'll still be able to share the topper comfortably with a partner. 👩‍❤️‍👨

Does the Simba topper sleep hot?

The Simba topper has been designed as a cooling mattress topper with numerous temperature regulation properties to suit those who easily feel hot:

  • The topper cover is breathable, allowing for a steady flow of air.
  • The side of the cover has a 3D mesh for extra airflow.
  • Simbatex has an open-cell structure and larger pores for enhanced breathability.
  • The spaces between the springs allow for natural ventilation channels, further enhancing airflow.

These features enhance airflow throughout the topper, wicking away heat and moisture and keeping you cooler and more comfortable all night long.

To test this, we contrasted the Simba topper to the Panda memory foam topper (memory foam is known to retain more heat).

Even though the Panda topper has cooling features, it still felt significantly warmer than the Simba topper.

If you're a heavier sweater or if you sleep hot, then going for a hybrid topper like the Simba is an excellent idea. 👌

Overall, the Simba topper is one of the most comfortable mattress toppers we've ever slept on, and it'll be well-suited to those looking for a cooler and slightly firmer sensation, as well as some added bounce.

What are the available Simba topper sizes?

The Simba Hybrid topper is available in all the standard UK mattress sizes. 🇬🇧

  • Simba mattress topper single: 90 x 190 cm (3' x 6'3")
  • Simba mattress topper small double: 120 x 190 cm (4' x 6'3")
  • Simba mattress topper double: 135 x 190 cm (4'4" x 6'3")
  • Simba mattress topper king-size: 150 x 200 cm (5' x 6'6")
  • Simba mattress topper super king-size: 180 x 200 cm (6' x 6'6")

The wide range of sizes is convenient as it ensures you can get the topper for any size bed!

What does the Simba mattress topper weigh?

The Simba mattress topper can be quite bulky, depending on the size you go for, but it won't weigh more than 20 kg (44 lbs).

  • Simba mattress topper single: 11.1 kg (24.5 lbs)
  • Simba mattress topper small double: 13.4 kg (29.5 kg)
  • Simba mattress topper double: 14.5 kg (32 lbs)
  • Simba mattress topper king-size: 16.5 kg (36.4)
  • Simba mattress topper super king-size: 19.1 kg (42.1 lbs)

Luckily, mattress toppers won't have to be moved often as your mattress protector and bedding will stretch above the topper itself.

What is the Simba mattress topper depth?

The Simba Hybrid topper has a depth of 7 cm (2.7 inches).

This is a good depth for toppers, above the industry standard of 5 cm (1.9 inches). 🥳

It also ensures that the topper really does change the way your mattress feels!

One issue you may encounter with deeper toppers like the Simba is that you need fitted sheets that will go over the depth of the topper and your mattress.

The Simba Performance fitted sheet and bed linen sets are no longer available in all sizes, but Panda bedding, which is designed to fit over mattresses up to 32 cm (12") deep, may be a good option.

(Note: prices listed above are regular prices excluding any current coupons & discounts)

The Simba mattress topper is an excellent product, but it is much more expensive than other mattress toppers on the market.

Of course, the premium price is primarly because of the hybrid nature of the topper as pocket sprung products are generally more expensive than all-foam products.

Simba mattress topper discounts

Even though Simba products are on the higher end of the price range, the company does occassionally offer discounts and promotions.

Most Simba discounts focus on the mattresses, but every now and then you'll be able to snag a percentage-off voucher or other discount for the Simba topper.

If there are any Simba mattress topper discounts currently running, we'll display them throughout this article.

Simba is a premium brand, and you can expect top-notch quality with this topper:

Simba delivery and trial conditions

The Simba Hybrid topper is delivered rolled up and boxed. 📦

Delivery is free within the UK mainland and usually takes place within 3 - 5 working days.

You can also choose additional delivery services at an extra cost, including two-man delivery and next-day delivery.

Simba mattress topper box

Simba mattress toppers are much smaller and lighter than the actual mattress, but the box is still quite large, so you may need a bit of help to carry it if you're of a more petite build. 💪

We needed a bit of help for our Simba topper review.

How do you unpack your Simba mattress topper?

The Simba mattress topper is compressed but unboxing is very simple:

  • Open the box on top of your mattress and roll out your mattress topper.
  • Cut off the plastic wrapping.
  • Roll out the topper across your bed.
  • Leave it to expand for at least 2 hours.

Your topper should be fully expanded in a maximum of 24 hours. ⏰

What's that smell?

Many bed-in-a-box mattresses and sleep products emit a chemical smell when you first unpack them. 🧪

This is called off-gassing, and whilte it's completely normal and non-toxic, the smell can be really unpleasant.

Unfortunately, we experienced severe off-gassing when we first unpacked the topper for our Simba mattress topper review. 😱

It took 3 or 4 days for the smell to disappear completely, but we didn't have any problems after that.

We'd always recommend that you unpack your new bed products in a well-ventilated room and let them air until the smell disappears.

Does the Simba mattress topper come with a trial period?

Conveniently, the Simba mattress topper comes with risk-free 200-night trial period.

This is a big up from the previous 14-day return policy Simba used to offer with its topper.

200 nights is great, as it'll give you plenty of time to test the topper and see if it works for you.

If you're not sleeping more comfortably than ever before, you can simply send the topper back and get a full refund.

The Simba Hybrid mattress topper also comes with a 1-year guarantee.

Is the Simba Hybrid mattress topper worth the money?

There's no denying that the Simba Hybrid topper is an excellent mattress topper, despite its signficiantly higher price tag.

If you have the budget available, this is an excellent buy.

Frequently asked questions

  • Are Simba mattress toppers environmentally-friendly?

Like all Simba products, the foams used in the Simba mattress topper are guaranteed to be pro-planet.

They're also free from TCPP, phosphate, parabens, biocides, organic pollutants, and other chemicals.

Simba foams are also CertiPUR-certified [1].

  • Where is the Simba mattress topper made?

The mattress topper Simba sells is sourced and made in Europe.

Mattress topper factories are also based in the UK and in Poland.

  • How do I store the Simba mattress topper?

Conveniently, the Simba topper's elasticated corner straps serve a dual purpose.

Not only do they keep the topper firmly on your mattress, but they also allow you to roll up the Simba topper and use the straps to fix it in place.

This means transporting or storing the Simba mattress topper is very easy.

  • Can I buy the Simba Hybrid mattress topper on Amazon?

Yes, the Simba Hybrid mattress topper is available on Amazon in the UK.

You can also find it at a few other retailers, such as the Simba mattress topper Argos selection.

But, we always recommend buying directly from Simba Sleep as it guarantees the best discounts and trial conditions.

  • Can I buy a Simba memory foam mattress topper?

Simba mattress toppers are not memory foam toppers.

Simba uses a combination of Aerocoil pocket springs, open-cell foam, and high-resilience foam to construct its mattress topper.

Simba actually doesn't have many memory foam products, though you will find memory foam in the Simba Hybrid pillow.

  • Can I put a mattress topper on a Simba mattress?

Yes, you can indeed put a mattress topper on a Simba mattress - but you'd only really need one if the mattress is too firm for you.

The Simba mattress topper is like a "small package" version of the Simba mattress.

If you don't like the feel of the mattress, you probably won't like the feel of the topper either.

That's why we always recommend using the 200-night risk-free trial period the Simba mattresses come with to decide if they're a good fit for you.

  • Do I need a mattress topper or a new mattress?

Mattress toppers are great but they can't fix all of your mattress-related problems.

If you have an old mattress that's worn out or sagging, you will have to buy a brand new mattress.

So how do you know if you need a new mattress or a new mattress topper? 🤔

If you have a high-quality mattress that's in a good condition but just a little too firm for you, you probably only need a mattress topper.

But also ask yourself the following questions:

    • Is my mattress old, worn out, or sagging?
    • Is my mattress too soft and do I sink into the foams too deeply?
    • In the case of spring mattresses, do I feel the springs in my back?
    • In the case of foam mattresses, are there visible dents that I feel while sleeping?

If the answer to any of these is "yes", then you'd probably need a new mattress. ✅
